Understanding Intravenous Laser Irradiation of Blood (ILIB)
Exploring cellular energy, circulation and clinical research through photobiomodulation
ILIB is a medical procedure that introduces low-level laser light into the blood through an intravenous optical fibre. Research has explored cellular energy metabolism, oxidative stress, pain, sleep, and selected blood lipid and blood pressure indicators.
This feature introduces the basic principles, clinical research, and points to consider before a consultation.
What is ILIB?
ILIB stands for Intravenous Laser Irradiation of Blood, commonly called intravenous laser therapy or low-level intravenous laser therapy.
Medical professionals establish venous access and deliver low-level laser light into a vein through a dedicated optical fibre. Some studies use a 632.8 nm red helium–neon laser; light sources, parameters, and schedules vary between devices and studies.
ILIB explores photobiomodulation: the relationship between light and cellular physiological responses. It is not intended to cauterise or destroy tissue through high temperatures.
Before treatment, a physician assesses suitability based on symptoms, medical history, medication, and individual needs.

Research directions in photobiomodulation
◎ ATP
Mitochondria and cellular energy
Mitochondria participate in cellular energy metabolism. ATP is an important molecule that supports cellular activity. Photobiomodulation research explores how specific wavelengths affect light-sensitive molecules within cells and subsequent energy metabolism.
ILIB studies have also examined white blood cell ATP and mitochondrial DNA to understand changes related to cellular energy before and after treatment.

Blood cells and microcirculation
○ ○ ○ · Blood cells / small vessel
Microcirculation involves blood flow through small vessels and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues. ILIB research examines relationships between blood cell properties, vascular regulation, and tissue circulation.

Oxidative stress and antioxidant responses
Oxidative stress may arise when oxidant production and the body’s antioxidant defences are out of balance. Researchers use indicators such as total antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation to observe related changes.
Some ILIB studies have reported changes in antioxidant capacity and oxidative stress markers in specific patient groups. This remains an area of investigation.

Inflammatory signals and physiological regulation
Inflammation is part of the body’s defence and repair responses. Photobiomodulation research explores relationships between light stimulation, inflammatory signalling, cellular responses, and physiological regulation.
Mechanistic studies help researchers understand possible ILIB actions and inform subsequent clinical research.
Clinical research and areas of application
ILIB clinical research spans different patient populations and physiological indicators. The topics below describe observed findings and their research context.
01 / 2022 · Retrospective · 76 participants
Pain and daily function
A 2022 retrospective study of 76 people with musculoskeletal disorders analysed pain and sleep scores before and after ILIB. It observed improvements in pain intensity and sleep quality.
The study offers preliminary information on ILIB as an adjunct for pain. Its retrospective design means controlled studies are still needed to establish treatment effects.
02 / Research findings / clinical observations
Sleep quality and daytime alertness
Research findings | Sleep is one focus of ILIB clinical research. Some studies have recorded improvements in sleep quality scales.
Clinical observations | Hospital clinical introductions also describe some patients reporting better sleep and daytime alertness after assessment and treatment.
03 / 2018 · Small study · 15 participants
Fibromyalgia and quality of life
A small 2018 study of 15 people with fibromyalgia assessed pain, sleep, mood, and quality of life before and after ILIB, observing improvements in some measures.
Fibromyalgia often involves pain, fatigue, and sleep difficulties together, so studies assess several aspects of patients’ wellbeing. This small study needs validation in larger research.
04 / 2012 · Sham-controlled study
Cellular energy and antioxidant markers
A study in adults with chronic spinal cord injury compared ILIB with sham treatment. On treatment day 15, it observed differences in white blood cell ATP, mitochondrial DNA, and total antioxidant capacity, alongside a reduction in a lipid peroxidation marker.
The study primarily provides physiological marker data related to cellular energy and oxidative stress.
05 / Professional introduction · Integrated care
Adjunctive use in neurological rehabilitation
ILIB has attracted interest in neurological rehabilitation, including stroke and spinal cord injury populations. Research and clinical applications explore energy metabolism, circulation, and physical condition during rehabilitation.
Within integrated rehabilitation care, teams arrange exercise, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other measures according to individual needs, then assess whether additional adjunctive procedures are appropriate.
06 / Mechanisms and research directions
Microcirculation and repair-related research
Circulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation are factors of interest in tissue repair. ILIB research explores possible physiological actions from these perspectives.
This section introduces research directions, without adding unsupported wound-healing rates, postoperative recovery times, or other efficacy figures.
07 / 2026 · Retrospective pilot · 60 participants
Blood lipids and cholesterol research
A Taiwanese retrospective pilot study published in 2026 included 60 people with chronic conditions who received ILIB, analysing blood lipid changes before and after treatment.
Triglycerides fell significantly in the overall sample. Further analysis of subgroups with elevated baseline lipids also found reductions in LDL and total cholesterol.
LDL and total cholesterol did not show the same significant findings in the overall sample. There was no parallel control group; larger randomised controlled trials are needed to confirm these findings.
08 / 2025 · Specific hypertension population · 100 participants
Blood pressure and vascular function research
A 2025 study included 100 people aged 18–45 with resistant hypertension, receiving either standard antihypertensive treatment or standard treatment plus intravenous laser therapy.
After two months, more people in the adjunctive laser group reached target blood pressure, and some vascular regulation indicators also improved.
This study examined adjunctive treatment in a specific population. Standard antihypertensive treatment continued throughout the study.

Frequently asked questions
Does ILIB require blood to be drawn out of the body?
Is ILIB itself a drug injection?
How many treatment sessions are usually needed?
What should I disclose before treatment?
Medical notice
ILIB involves venous puncture and may cause local pain, bleeding, bruising, or infection. It requires assessment and administration by medical professionals. Evidence varies by application; some information comes from small studies, retrospective analyses, or clinical observations. Use should follow the device’s approved indications, product instructions, and physician judgement. Do not stop medication or replace existing treatment on your own.
